Here’s a beginner’s guide to cleaning and sanitizing brewing equipment via Northern Homebrewer. Many a home brewer has lost a batch to improper sanitation. Bad sanitation can lead to bacterial contaminations, medicinal flavors (usually the result of using a cleanser or sanitizer that is chlorine or iodine based) and excess pressure.
If you’ve bought a brewing kit, you probably don’t want to use the sanitizer that comes with it because it’s slow and not usually effective. No-rinse sanitizers, like Star-San or Iodophor , are faster and easier. Make sure you don’t scratch your plastics, because sanitizers work best on perfectly clean, scratch free surfaces.
